Blessing of Crosses & Crucifixes

Every so often the Church’s Liturgical Calendar has a feast day that fall on Sundays in Ordinary Time, next Sunday September 14th is one of those times. The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross marks a double Anniversary the dedication of the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem in 335 (destroyed in 614; then rebuilt in 1149) and the founding of the True Cross by the Empress Helena in the year 320.

To mark this special Feast we will celebrate during our Masses next weekend the Blessing of Crosses and Crucifixes. It is an opportunity for you to bring the cross or crucifix from your home, or if you have cross jewelry that you wear, to have them blessed or rededicated. The cross is one of the most popular symbols of our faith and this feast celebrates the salvation that was won for us through the cross. May we participate with great joy in this feast rejoicing that we have been saved through the wood of the cross!
